The holidays are over and school has commenced. It’s a new year, new semester and this time it’s going to be different. It can be daunting and overwhelming to think of what the new semester might bring. New stress, sleepless nights, new sleep schedules, and having to adjust to all new syllabi and so on. HSS would like to give five little tips that can help ease a person into a new semester.
§ Know when school starts and begin making plans for how you will be getting back to school. It’s hard enough having to switch into school mode once being home has become comfortable again, but being late will make that transition harder. Allow time to become acquainted with the campus, new living situations, time to get food for school, and to replace in school and living necessities. This will make the new semester easier to transition into having one’s home life situated.
§ Next, make sure all syllabi have been read, highlighted, and read again. Knowing who your professors are and what they expect lessens the stress of what the semester will entail. This way, students will know how soon they need to begin studying for quizzes and exams. Also, by studying the syllabus before the semester begins, one can create a schedule aligning their class times with their work or gym schedule.
§ While reading the course syllabus, notice what book is required for the course. By buying the text beforehand, the amount of stress one may feel will be greatly lessened. There is nothing more overwhelming than going into a class and having the professor speak all new information of expectations and as a student having no clue where to start. By having the book, a student will have a better idea of what the course will entail. Skimming the chapters that will be covered over the semester will make the class seem less intimidating giving the student a better sense of control.
§ Most importantly, make sure all financial aid needs have been met. Be aware of the fiscal responsibilities and complete all task needed in order for a student to be able to purchase books, courses, clothes, and maybe a pen. College is a time to learn how to be an adult and this is a very adult action.
§ Finally update any school appliances needed or just because. As a kid it was always easier to wake up for school when there were new clothes or new shoes to debut. By purchasing some new clothes, shoes, a new backpack or laptop will put a positive spin on an otherwise resistant transition.
By doing one, two or all of these tips and even some not mentioned, students will be better equipped to knock out another semester of college. Moving them closer to their aspirations effectively correcting their perception from a negative one to an ambitious positive one. Good Luck on the 2016 spring semester Devils. We Can Do This
