Valentine’s Day is coming up, and ASU’s Health Science Society wants to make it easy for those who want to spoil their significant others with treats without busting their diets. This day is meant for chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate, but some couples, family members or friends may be struggling to acquire the perfect gift without falling off track. This is the time to pull out the little child inside all of us, and become inventive. There is more to Valentine’s Day than simply chocolate covered strawberries. By thinking outside the box and using what one may have thought of as a limitation to an advantage, this day will become all the more romantic and unforgettable.
For instance, this winter has brought about a severe snow storm leaving a majority of the population indoors. But this can also be an opportunity to cook a nice comforting meal or a romantic candle-lit dinner for loved ones. If the weather permits, going ice-skating will be a memorable outing.

If not trapped by cold weather, going on a hike or taking a fitness class together will be an energy-full bonding moment between a loving pair. Going on a bike ride, full body massages or venturing out onto the water for a tandem kayaking experience are exceptional ways to dazzle the special someone with an unexpected adventure. For those specifically in the Lake Havasu area, hiking to Table Top this weekend and viewing the firework show or taking a nice hike through Sara’s Crack followed by a nice dip in the lake will make any active person happy on V-Day.
Now, and most importantly, it’s important to not feel trapped by culinary decisions that need to be made. Although the status quo for Valentine’s Day tends to be sweets, carbs and shame, by thinking outside of the box there are plenty of inventive ways to feed your loved ones without compromise. Making a picnic, homemade couple’s sushi or hiring a personal chef with healthy food choice options are perfect ways around the guilt lane. Also substituting fruit for all the sweet vices one may have will give that little sense of indulgence without the numerous calories.
In all honesty, this day is meant to be shared with the ones you love whether or not there is a schedule planned. If all else fails and none of these activities help, spending a day showering ones significant other with love, affection and time should be just enough to make it special and memorable. Happy Valentine’s Day from the Health Science Society and everyone else here at ASU Havasu. <3
